Earthquake Disaster Movies

Updated on September 11, 2014

I love it when Los Angeles is destroyed

California is known for it's earthquakes and as a California native, born in Los Angeles, I have experienced my share. Those of us who have experienced earthquakes take sort of a fatalistic view of them and what they can do. Generally, they are localized so that an earthquake in LA may be felt here but other than the initial scare, it amounts to nothing,. That's what makes the earthquake movies so great. A small tremor in LA or Yellowstone can become a world disaster. While there may be some truth attached to the movies, the rest is pure science fiction.

Earthquake - When the "Big One" finally hits L.A.

Earthquake, the movie - OK, it's old and "slightly dated" but still remains a favorite

The Amazon review of this film by Jeff Shannon has one line that says it all. "It's another one of those enjoyably mindless all-star marathons, and the title tells you all you need to know about the plot." Still, I had met Loren Greene (Bonanza) in a music store and had a major crush on him. I liked the way that the "ordinary" people were living their lives when they were all thrown together to work through the disaster. It may be one of the most realistic films in terms of damage and the scope of the earthquake.

10.5 (2004) - I loved the premise of this movie. We all expect that the big one will travel down the fault lines creating havoc along the West Coast. This one d

The movie is full of drama and just plain fun. How do stop an earthquake? Well, there are always nuclear bombs. The cast of characters is huge and it takes a while to determine how they are related but once you have that down, it gets easier. Kim Delaney and Beau Bridges have recurring roles in both this movie and 10.5 Apocalypse, the sequel.

Am I being a little smug?

No not really, earthquakes are a very real threat

As mentioned, I love it when LA is destroyed but I am not smug. We are prepared for the big one although I keep waiting. We used to hear that it was expected in 30 years or so. When that didn't happen, they said it would be in the next 30 years. Now that I am beyond 60-yrs-old, it could be any minute. I am no longer afraid of them here because every time we have an earthquake, they retrofit something else. It is pretty safe and even my mobile home has a roller foundation. What scare me more is traveling on the East Coast where the buildings are older and not retrofitted. I know which brick patterns on the buildings will not hold. Earthquakes are deadly so we are always prepared.

Of all the major earthquakes, this was the first that was well documented.

Earthquake preparedness

I am prepared. Some of them go camping with us because being prepared is not just for disasters. At home, I also have three 50 gallon drums of water that are stored away from the house. While I love the disaster movies, I know that being prepared is the best thing to do.

Emergency Kit

For a kit, this is pretty complete. I like that it's all stored in a bucket. That makes it easy to move to a safe place after an earthquake. The backpacks are OK but nothing get crushed in the bucket.

Emergency Drinking Water

Like I already mentioned, I have 3 50-gallon drums in my backyard. The major concern I have is the water. They tell you to fill the tub as soon as the earthquake is over. Filling the tub is OK if it's not damaged. This is a separate container instantly available to fill. I don't have one yet but it's on the list of things to purchase.

I'm earthquake safe - Are you?

I love all the earthquake disaster movies. I think I love them because I can't imagine that what the future holds for us will be as bad as the movies suggest. I could be wrong. Still, if we were to have a major earthquake and a little of California fell into the sea, I could be living on an island. Without going into the whole plate tectonics stuff, we are on the side of California that is moving away from the Continental United States. Property values would soar and I could become a millionaire. There might be a silver lining.
